WinNc.Net is a file manager that replaces the use of the existing Windows Explorer. Developed by a small Dutch multimedia company called Dunes MultiMedia, WinNc uses the same key shortcuts and the same mouse functionality as a well-known DOS file manager. Lots of tool buttons and menu items provide access to standard file-management methods. You can easily format, copy, move, delete, view, and edit files.
Version 4.400d may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.
WinNc.Net
Pros: Clean, uncluttered screen.
Easy to copy current path to clipboard.
Good filtered view of large directories (but see cons). Icon bars easy to customize (but hard to make customizations stick).
Cons: I recently purchased Winnc.net and am very disappointed.
- It has frozen my XP system several times
- Once I deselected file X, selected file Y, clicked on PROPERTIES, and ended up with properties of file X instead of Y
- I wanted to filter out files that began with an underscore, but specifying the string "_*" in the Exclude field of the filter produced no change in the file list
- It doesn't seem to be possible to drag and drop files into a directory that's in the same pane as the files (trying to reorganize a directory, so I created several subdirectories within it, then tried to drag sets of files from that directory into the subdirectories) - Simple thing I thought. Even Windows explorer lets you do it. But WinNc.net does not.
- There's no batch rename feature
- Switching to "Tree" view resets focus to the root directory of that drive, instead of keeping it on my current location within that drive.
- The web site's "contact us" area doesn't provide an email address
- Emails that I sent have gone unanswered (well, 3 out of 4 anyway)
- I can't seem to make my "customizations" stick. I create my own icon bars, adjust their size and position, "save" the configuration, and each time I start up WinNc.net I have to reload the configuration
- In order to see or modify a file's properties (ie, things like "Artist" for an MP3), I need to use Window's right-click function)
WinNc.Net
Pros: I used WinNC.Net for a day to Windows Explorer became unstable. This program did its job, allowing me to manage files through software other than the MS brand. There are a large number of excellent features here that would have taken me several days to sort and learn.
Cons: The developers probably should have focused on the ease of use for the most basic and common usages and perfected this before adding all those features. As described in an earlier review, files can not be dragged-and-dropped within the same frame. That is functionality which has been standard in Windows Explorer after (I think) Windows 3. That, however, is just one example. What really bothered me the most is that WinNC.Net assumes I will always be copying a file instead of moving one. I move files a *lot* more often to copying them, but to do so in WinNC.Net was a pain. I had to either type in the new location manually or else copy the file, reselect the original file, and then manually delete it. According to the Help File, I should press the Shift Key while dragging in order to move a file without copying. Guess what -- the Shift Key trick simply doesn't work. I'm certain there is a way to fix this entire mess by customizing the options to my preferences, but I can't find it.
I have switched to Xplorer2 freeware version, and I'm quite happy with that less robust but more usable file manager.
WinNc.Net
usefull program with some bugs
Cons: This program can not copy files with longer file names or with diakritics :-(
WinNc.Net
Allround computer and file manager
Pros: It's a very handy tool for lots of things; i especially like the functions for the different types of file compression and unpacking (zip, rar etc.), but also for musicfiles like conversion of mp3 and wav files. The synchronization of the content of directories and maps, ftp-interface and pictureviewer are also nice. The rest of the program has a comparable functionality as Windows Explorer, only with a better interface due to the two screens which make the copy, replace and all other filehandling very easy and synoptic. Automatic updates come in frequently.
Cons: It's inconvenient to work on a computer without WinNc, because on my own computer it has become my central workspace for almost everything. I don't appreciate Explorer anymore...
I complained at their helpdesk for the problem of replacing large directories at once (more than 20GB), but after 6 hours I got answered their working on that in next version. With all the pro's this is just a small and temporary con.
WinNc.Net
Pros: I cant tell everything I like about Winnc because there is not enough space! I am a heavy user of Winnc, the first thing I do when I start my computer is hit the Winnc button. Ive worked with this program for a couple of years and cant even work without it anymore.
The basic features of Winnc are the best; copy, past, move, zip and so on. I also use the photo viewer a lot, to organize and watch my pictures and burn them
Very easy and quick access to my network drives, shortcuts to important maps and drives
These are only some basic features but defiantly worth buying for.
Cons: I have only one problem with Winnc or better said without Winnc. Because Ive used it for so long, I really cant work without it anymore. When I am working on a computer without Winnc and I am forced to work with explorer a cant find anything, this helps me reminder how good Winnc is! I absolutely dont understand how people can work with explorer, probably because they havent worked with Winnc yet!
