General Description

AutoTyper is a drag&drop utility to fix type and creator codes of files you have downloaded from the internet or non-MacOS file systems. When you drop a file on it's icon or on it's window it examines the file name extension and fixes the file's type and creator code without further request.

AutoTyper supports recursive processing of folders and whole disks. AutoTyper does not follow aliases.

AutoTyper can be teached new file types, either if you miss a certain file type or because you prefer other applications for some file types.

Instructions

AutoTyper is a drag & drop utility and therefore it requires System 7 or higher. If you drag files on it's icon it will just try to fix the file type and creator and then quit.

In order to select the proper file type AutoTyper examines the file name's extension: e.g. files with a name ending on .txt get their file type set to TEXT. An initial list of known extensions and their corresponding file types and creators is built into the source.

AutoTyper already knows about following file types:

All files with unknown extensions are ignored. The new icon is displayed after a while or after the enclosing folder is closed and reopened again. (this depends on Finder version.)

Customizing AutoTyper

If you want to add new file types and/or want to assign different applications as creator to some file types, you can teach AutoTyper new settings.

Open AutoTyper by double clicking it's icon and select Template mode from the Options menu. AutoTyper's message window will change to black to remind you of this state.

Now drag any files with proper file type and creator and with proper file name extension on AutoTyper's icon or on the message window and AutoTyper will remember the new settings: they are written to the preferences file when you quit AutoTyper.

E.g.: if you have a special archive utility to handle zip archive files, drag one of the zip files on AutoTyper. If you have no zip file at hand, create and save a small file from your zip application. Make shure that the file name ends on .zip, then drag it on AutoTyper.

When you are done quit AutoTyper or switch off Template mode and leave it hanging around in the background.

When you select Save preferences from the Options menu, the database is saved to the preferences file imediately and the window position and size is remembered for next start-up too.

If you just want to delete some settings you can edit the preferences file with a text editor.
