Xinorbis Review
Note: There is an excellent help file, available in PDF format which, according to the official homepage it is included in both installer and portable versions (unfortunately for me, it didn't launched from the software interface). Just in case that you encounter the same issue, you can download it from here.
Setup: This tool is available in two versions (three if you count the Command-line version) as a standard installer and a portable version. The current version is clean (no bundles, adware or anything like that) and unless you want to customize the setup process, there are no warnings, it's one of those software titles that you can hit "Next" without thinking too much. Just install and launch the program.
Usability: I suppose that most users will just want a tool that can help them identify the current space usage distribution on their hard drives or any other USB or storage device. For such simple tasks, just open the program, choose "Select" button and hit "Scan". Wait a few seconds or minutes (depending on the size and your computer resources) and when it finish the scan, the "Summary" page will open automatically revealing all kind of interesting stats.
If you browse all the sections listed in the main "View" category, you will notice a long list of options such as "Folder properties", "Folder structure", "Search", "File size spread", "Duplicates (File name)", "Duplicate (File size), "Folder detail" and "File age".
Important: You should pay attention to the first feature named "Folder properties" which also has a long list of sections: "Categories", "Type", "Extensions", "Folders", "Magnitude", "Dates", "History", "Top 101", "Null", "Users", "Temp".
Some of these sections will allow you to identify easily the files that you might want to remove from your hard drive to clear some space. Please, be careful when you attempt to use the "Delete" function. If you choose a section, let's say "Top 101" (to see which files takes the most space) and perform the standard "right-click" with your mouse on a certain file and choose to delete that file, make sure that you select "Delete - Selected" and not "All".
If you choose "All" it will delete all the files from that category. Obviously make sure that you know what file(s) you want to delete, otherwise you might accidentally delete operating system files.
The last section named "Quick Reports" is probably "optional" for most users, you can use it only if you need a report.
Conclusion: Until a few days ago, I never heard about Xinorbis and I was quite surprissed about its long list of features. After playing with this tool for several hours I can honestly say that I am not aware of any other tool (right-now) in this area that offers the same amount of features. I might be wrong but I would name it the most complex disk space analyser for Microsoft Windows users. Also, I noticed that the author seems to be quite dedicated to his work, eagerly looking to add new features and improve Xinorbis all the time. Therefore, dear fellow, please consider a donation to support future development of this marvelous tool!
