I wrote the application Webu because I was tired of constantly checking dozens of news, technology, science, comment, sport and entertainment sites etc for something that I would find interesting. Since RSS came out there are loads of "aggregator" sites that will take all your favourite feeds and show you the headlines for all of them, but as far I have seen so far, none of them do what Webu does and gradually learn about what you like and dislike based on your constant feedback (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken). Even the top sites I have looked at only offer simple keyword monitoring, but this will miss out on all kinds of similar content that happens to not contain the exact keywords.
Since I wrote Webu I have been using it for around 6-8 weeks and I have managed to find so much more interesting content that I would have missed previously, or would have had to spend hours surfing the web to find - now I just leave it running in my system tray all day and it works in the background, doing deep scans against all kinds of different RSS feeds and only alerts me when it finds something that it thinks I would like, based on the feedback I provide it.
Making money from shareware?....No
Anyway, although I am committed to giving the software away for free, it would be nice to be able to make some money from it somehow. I have worked in IT for many years as a basic wage-slave and am tired of constantly being one pay-cheque away from poverty, living one month to the next struggling to pay the bills and provide for my family whilst I worry about my job being outsourced to India. I considered trying to make the program shareware, but figured that charging £20 for it would drastically cut the number of people using it, it would simply end up being cracked by pirates, and I might make a few hundred pounds a year at the most - it just doesn't seem worth it.
A web version...
However, I am starting to think that a web-version of the software might be able to fulfill both of my requirements - having a large user-base and also making some serious money. Here's how I think it might work: you would sign up on the website for a free account - this is absolutely critical - usage of the site must be 100% free in order to generate a sufficient number of users. Now, instead of running the software the way Webu works now (as a Windows desktop application), the web server would run 24x7, searching all your feeds for interesting content even when you weren't using it. This is the main point - the next time you come back to the site it will immediately have a ton of interesting links and articles for you, as it works for you even when you are asleep! You would then provide feedback to the site in the same way Webu works, by rating each article from -10 to +10, it would then update its database and go off searching for more stuff. Every time you came back to the site it would have something new! This has a massive advantage over the desktop program, as you need to wait while Webu trawls all the RSS feeds, but with the web version it would just run continually, day and night so that you never have to wait while it finds content. Also, you don't need to have the software with you on a laptop/memory stick - you could easily access it from anywhere in the world.
How to make money
As I have mentioned, usage of the site would be 100% free, so the way to make money from it would be from advertising. This is where it gets quite exciting - as the program gradually learns about what you are interested in, there is a very good opportunity for providing targeted adverts, a bit like the way Google ads works, but this time instead of simple keyword matching, this site would be able to target you with very specific ads - for example, the system might gradually learn the fact that you are interested in house prices in New York and direct you to an estate agent there. It would learn that articles about school fees in London are something you always rate highly, so it would show you ads for these, and so on. Don't forget that not all RSS feeds contain news articles - feeds about the latest pop bands could be published by music sites etc, so there is plenty of different content that could be analysed for appropriate adverts.
Proposition
Ok, now that I have explained how it might works, this is what I am after and why I put this page up: I have *nothing* to offer except the technical skills and the time to make this work. I cannot provide a penny of funding for this - I can barely afford to feed my family each month after paying all my bills, so I need a partner who is willing to fund this 100%. I don't think this would take a vast amount of money, it would simply need website hosting and a domain name, a powerful server to run the software (scanning for thousands of users' RSS feeds would be very resource-intensive) and a good size database. I would like to start off by building a prototype website and "test the water" first, so it doesn't need much to get this off the ground. However, if it did start to generate a lot of interest, it may need bigger server(s) very quickly to cope with the intensive demand.
If this is an opportunity that interests you, this is a description of the kind of person I would like to partner with: in Silicon Valley lore, every startup business needs "geeks" and "suits". I will be the "geek", you will be the "suit". Like I said, you will provide all the money for the web server etc. You will also take care of legal stuff like copyright issues, patent issues, data protection, PR, all the accounting stuff should we decide to set up a proper legal company and do this properly. Once we get to the point of hosting adverts, you will need to take care of all of this, i.e. negotiating with companies to run their ads. I will do all of the technical work like building the website, developing and maintaining the RSS scanning software etc. Although I will do all the "hard work" of making the software scanning engine work, I have no creative ability (as you can see from my web pages!) and would need someone to actually take care of the "look and feel" of the site, and this would probably require the services of a graphic design company for a couple of days - you would need to fund this as well. You can probably be based anywhere in the world, but as I am based in UK I would like any legal company/bank account that we set up to be based here, otherwise there is a risk that I could end up being defrauded - sorry to be pedantic about this but I cannot run the risk of somebody running off with the money! If you were based in or near to London it would be ideal.
Please only respond to this if you convinced that it is a great opportunity and are truly commmitted to doing it properly - I tried to set up a business venture a few years ago with someone who didn't pull their weight and didn't show a lot of interest in the project which was very frustrating, especially as I had put months of effort into developing the software. If you have the drive to get something like this off the ground, and are willing to fund the project 100% then please get in touch - you don't need to send a CV or anything but it would be interesting to know what kind of a background you have. Previous experience of working in sales/marketing or setting up a startup company would be useful. I hope that you will download and play around with Webu (and my other programs) to get an idea of my capabilities (as well as give you and understanding about how it works and some thoughts about how to make money from it). Also if you can think of a brand name it would help - something like "Intelligent News" or "Smart Searcher" - I only named it Webu because I couldn't think of anything else - my creative/marketing abilities are absolutely non-existent so if you can think of a decent name please let me know! (and it's your job to make sure it isn't copyrighted by someone else...)
Terms and conditions
I need to make it absolutely clear that I cannot pay a penny towards this (and I'm not willing to borrow money against my house or anything like that), so all of the financial risk is yours, although as I have mentioned, I don't actually think it would take a lot of money to get it off the ground. If it doesn't work out, you can even take your web server back. I would like to go for a 50/50 split of any money/shares etc that are generated, I'm not interested in hearing from some kind of venture capitalist who wants to own 80% of the company. The work would probably be divided roughly down the middle, you taking care of the "business" side while I do alll the "tech" stuff.
